NPP Sets New Age Limit for Youth Organizer Position

At today’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Delegates Congress held at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon, a major constitutional amendment was adopted, sparking widespread attention—particularly regarding the age limit of the Youth Organizer role.
Under Motion Fifty-Four, delegates voted to amend Article 15(4) of the party’s constitution to officially define “Youth” as a party member who is not above the age of 35 years.
The amendment reads:
“Amend article 15(4) of the Constitution by defining ‘Youth’ in the Constitution to refer to a Member of the Party who is not above the age of 35 years.”
The decision aligns the party’s internal definitions with international standards and national laws. According to references cited in the motion:
- The United Nations defines youth between ages 15-24.
- The World Health Organization (WHO): 15-29
- UNICEF and the International Labour Organization (ILO): 15-24
- The African Youth Charter: 15-35
- In Ghana, the National Youth Authority Act, 2016 (Act 939) defines youth as any person between the ages of 15 and 35.
Delegates say this amendment was necessary to eliminate ambiguities surrounding the eligibility criteria for the Youth Organizer position and to uphold consistency with both global and local youth-related governance policies.
The amendment is expected to reshape future elections within the party, especially at the youth level, and could impact current officeholders who exceed the new age cap.
