PRESIDENT MAHAMA'S POPULIST APPROACH TO POST-ELECTION VIOLENCE IS WORRYING

Minister Isaac who is the Youth Advocate for Local Government Advocate writes: Ghana is currently at a crossroads, grappling with the aftermath of recent post-election violence that has shaken the very foundations of its democracy. Amid this turmoil, President John Mahama's response has been underwhelming, to say the least. His silence in the face of alarming incidents, particularly the attack on AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) by alleged National Democratic Congress (NDC) members, has raised serious concerns about his leadership and commitment to the country's stability as he preached in opposition.

Instead of condemning these acts of aggression, Mahama's populist approach has leaned towards shifting blame, allowing AGA to bear the financial burden of injuries and funerals. This response is not only troubling but also underscores a broader trend in which leaders prioritize political expediency over moral obligation.

The attack on AGA is particularly egregious, and President Mahama's failure to condemn it is a stark reminder of his administration's lack of accountability. As the leader of the NDC, Mahama bears a unique responsibility to address these actions directly and instill a sense of accountability within his ranks. Unfortunately, his continued silence is nothing short of complicit endorsement.

This is not an isolated incident. In recent months, the news has been rife with reports of NDC foot soldiers attacking public institutions, further contributing to the climate of fear and instability in Ghana. From violent protests to unwarranted vandalism, these actions paint a grim picture of a political party that seems unmoored from the values of democracy and respect for public order.

As President Mahama seeks to make appointments and heralds his "reset agenda," there is an evident disconnect between the rhetoric and the reality on the ground. While he appears keen on positioning himself for the work ahead, the escalating violence perpetrated by NDC party loyalists creates a worrisome backdrop that undermines any genuine efforts at reform.

True leadership requires courage and in times of crisis, it demands a clear and unwavering commitment to peace and order. Ghana is at a pivotal juncture where effective governance and social cohesion are paramount. By failing to decisively condemn the violent actions within his party, President Mahama risks normalizing violence as a way of expressing disagreement.

This trajectory not only threatens the stability of Ghana but also hinders its progress toward becoming a model of democracy on the African continent. President Mahama must rise above a populist approach that ultimately weakens the fabric of our society. He must reclaim his role as a leader by vigorously denouncing acts of violence, and holding lawbreakers accountable.
