Alliance of Drivers Ghana Announces 30% Fare Increase from July 21

Accra, Ghana – The Alliance of Drivers Ghana has announced a 30% increase in transport fares effective Monday, 21st July 2025, citing the introduction of a new energy sector levy and rising fuel costs as the main reasons.

In a strongly worded statement, the group questioned the representation of drivers at a recent government meeting, accusing the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of acting unilaterally and failing to consult its broader membership.

“We are asking the mother union, GPRTU’s National PRO, Alhaji Moro, why certain driver unions were sidelined during the government meeting. Was the decision on the levy taken solely on behalf of GPRTU members? The GPRTU must stop making decisions without consulting the drivers it claims to represent,” the statement read.

On June 5, 2025, the Alliance had already voiced strong opposition to the proposed ₵1 Energy Sector Levy on fuel, warning of its devastating impact on both the transport sector and commuters. According to the Alliance, fuel prices have already increased significantly, with petrol rising from ₵12.07 to ₵12.88 per litre, and diesel from ₵13.20 to ₵14.38 per litre. Another 9% increase in fuel prices is anticipated in the next pricing window.

“The new levy will only worsen the already unbearable operational costs for drivers, and we have no option but to adjust fares. This 30% increment is necessary to sustain our operations,” the group emphasized.

The Alliance also expressed frustration that while transport fares have previously been reduced, the cost of spare parts, road insurance, and engine oil have remained unchanged, and market prices of goods have not reflected any transport-related reductions.

The leadership has appealed to the general public and commuters to understand the situation and comply with the new fare adjustments.

“We urge all commuters to comply with the new directives. This is not a strike, but a survival measure,” said National Organiser Ishmael Chobal.
