FUEL LEVY: IMPLEMENTATION COULD UNLEASH HARDSHIP ON GHANAIANS- MINORITY

The Minority in Parliament have criticized the Mahama-led administration for introducing what they term as draconian tax measures through the 1 Ghana cedi levy imposed on the purchase of petroleum products.

Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi and Ranking member on the economy and development committee Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in comparing the 1 cedi fuel levy to the E-Levy opined that, the 8 percent levy on petroleum products is akin to taking 5 billion cedis from the Ghanaian people despite the government claiming they had given the Ghanaian people 2 billion cedis in revenue through the cancellation of the E-Levy.

He further touched on the reach of the E-levy which did not touch transactions below 100 cedis which was a threshold reserved for the poor whiles the 1 cedi levy on petroleum products affects all especially the poor.

Minority compares E-Levy to D-Levy; say its implementation could unleash hardship on Ghanaians.

They are also accusing  the NDC government of betraying public trust with the sudden introduction of the energy sector levy (amendment bill 2025).

They argue that the move marks a complete reversal of the party’s earlier stance against such taxes, describing it as hypocritical and deceptive. The levy  they say, is not only one of the highest in Ghana’s history but also quietly places a heavier burden on Ghanaians than the much-criticized E-Levy.
