NPP Denies Claims That Widow of Late Ernest Kumi Is Contesting Akwatia Seat

Tuesday, July 15, 2025 – Koforidua – The Eastern Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong rebuttal to rumors suggesting that Mrs. Mavis Kumi, widow of the late Hon. Ernest Kumi, is preparing to contest the Akwatia parliamentary seat.
In an official statement signed by Eastern Regional Chairman Jeff Konadu Addo, the party described the claims circulating via flyers on social media as “false, misleading, and deserving of the utmost contempt.”
The release clarifies that the party has been in close contact with Mrs. Kumi and her family since the passing of her husband, who was serving as MP for Akwatia until his death on July 7, 2025. During those discussions, the widow is said to have “unequivocally communicated that she has no interest in contesting the seat or participating in active politics at this time.”
“Her current focus, as any grieving wife would understandably desire, is to mourn her husband with dignity and in peace,” the statement noted.
The party has urged all NPP members, Akwatia constituents, and the general public to disregard the flyers, stressing that the materials were not sanctioned by the party and do not reflect the wishes of Mrs. Kumi.
The Eastern Regional Secretariat also called for sensitivity and respect during this period of mourning, warning that misinformation of this nature only deepens the pain of the grieving family.
“The memory of Hon. Ernest Kumi; a committed patriot and loyal servant of our Party and the people of Akwatia; deserves to be honored in truth and respect,” the statement added.
The NPP concluded by inviting all supporters and sympathizers to offer prayers and support for Mrs. Kumi and her family, reaffirming the party’s commitment to unity, decorum, and integrity.
