Bolgatanga, Upper East Region – Members of M-CODE (Municipal Community Development and Empowerment) Upper East Region embarked on a sensitization exercise today, August 16, 2024, at the Bolgatanga market. The initiative aimed to educate traders and market stakeholders on the dangers of open defecation and its link to prevalent waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

During the exercise, M-CODE members engaged with market women and men, raising awareness about the importance of proper waste management and sanitation practices. The team emphasized that open defecation poses significant health risks, contaminating water sources and contributing to the spread of diseases.

In a collaborative effort, M-CODE members joined forces with “The Street Janitors,” a volunteer group dedicated to maintaining cleanliness in the regional capital. Together, they worked to dislodge choked gutters, improving drainage and reducing the risk of waterborne disease outbreaks.

The joint initiative highlights the importance of community-led initiatives in promoting public health and sanitation. M-CODE’s efforts aim to empower local communities to take ownership of their environment, fostering a culture of cleanliness and responsibility.

By working together, M-CODE and “The Street Janitors” are making a tangible impact in Bolgatanga, promoting a healthier and more sustainable environment for residents.
