FDA Suspends Production of Tasty Tom Tomato Mix Over Safety Concerns

JHNews || Accra, August 3, 2025 — The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix with immediate effect, citing serious quality and safety breaches at Nutrifoods Ghana Limited’s production facility.

The FDA had earlier directed a market recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix products, as well as specific batches of 380g and 1.05kg pouches, after receiving consumer complaints.

An inspection of the manufacturing plant revealed poor maintenance of critical equipment and inadequate monitoring systems, which compromised the sealing mechanisms of the canned products. This resulted in contamination, bloating, and mold growth in some pouches — posing significant public health risks.

The FDA noted that Nutrifoods had previously been barred from producing the product in January 2025, and said it had launched an internal investigation to determine whether there were any regulatory lapses in oversight.

The Authority urged consumers, wholesalers, and retailers to comply with the directive and assured the public that it remains committed to protecting public health through strict regulatory enforcement.
