BREAKING: Defence Minister, Environment Minister Among Victims of Military Helicopter Crash

Accra, August 6, 2025 — The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has confirmed the deaths of several high-profile government officials following a fatal crash involving a Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter.

Among the deceased are:

  • Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah

  • Environment Minister Murtala Mohammed

  • Former Ashanti Regional Minister Samuel Sarpong

  • Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

  • Samuel Aboagye, former Member of Parliament

  • Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC

The crash also claimed the lives of the three crew members:

  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala

  • Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu

  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

According to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the helicopter took off from Accra at 09:12 a.m. and was heading to Obuasi when it went off radar. The GAF confirmed there were three crew members and five passengers on board.

Eyewitnesses in Adansi Akrofum, Ashanti Region, report that the helicopter crashed and burned beyond recognition.

The GAF says efforts are ongoing to recover remains and investigate the cause of the crash.
