Public Transport Fares to Increase by 20% Effective August 8 – GRTCC

Accra, August 5, 2025 — The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has announced a 20 percent increase in public transport fares, set to take effect from Friday, August 8, 2025. The hike affects shared taxis, intra-city (tro-tro), intercity (long-distance) buses, and haulage services across the country.

According to a press release issued by the Council, the decision follows ongoing economic challenges facing commercial transport operators, including increased fuel prices, maintenance costs, and a lack of corresponding reductions in the cost of spare parts and services.

The GRTCC explained that this latest increment is necessary due to three major factors:

The absence of price reductions on spare parts and related goods, despite a 15 percent fare reduction implemented on May 21, 2025.

An 8 percent increase in fuel costs triggered by the recent introduction of a GHS 1.00 per liter fuel levy.

Rising vehicle maintenance expenses, attributed to the deteriorating state of roads nationwide.

The Council has urged all commercial transport operators to comply with the new fares and to display the revised rates at their respective terminals. It also appealed to commuters and the general public for cooperation as the new fares take effect.

The statement was jointly signed by Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, General Secretary of the GRTCC, and Alhaji Tanko, Acting National Chairman.

The fare adjustment comes amid rising concerns about inflation and the cost of living, placing additional pressure on everyday commuters who rely on public transportation.

The GRTCC has called on the Ministry of Transport and all media houses to assist in disseminating the information to ensure a smooth transition
