Accra, August 2025 – The Ghana Police Service has announced with pride the election of Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), to serve a four-year term on the newly formed INTERPOL Africa Committee.

COP Donkor is the only female member of the committee, making her election a landmark moment for gender inclusion in high-level policing across the continent. Her achievement marks the first time a Ghanaian has been elected to a regional committee of INTERPOL, the world’s largest policing organization.

The Police Service described her election as both a recognition of her distinguished career and leadership and a testament to Ghana’s growing influence in global security cooperation.

“This milestone represents not just her personal achievement, but also a breakthrough for women in policing across Africa,” a statement from the Service said.

The newly formed INTERPOL Africa Regional Committee will play a crucial role in strengthening cross-border law enforcement collaboration. Its mandate includes identifying strategic priorities in the fight against crime, advising the African Regional Conference, and addressing policing challenges unique to the continent.

Alongside Ghana, the committee includes representatives from Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa, who will also serve four-year terms, while Botswana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Sudan have been elected for two-year terms.

COP Lydia Donkor’s appointment is expected to bring expertise, dedication, and international recognition to Ghana and the African continent over the next four years.
