Health officials say the move is precautionary, aimed at strengthening monitoring systems and improving response capacity, even though no widespread outbreak has been reported locally.

The enhanced surveillance includes increased monitoring at health facilities, improved data collection and reporting systems, and training of healthcare workers to identify symptoms associated with the virus.

Hantavirus is primarily transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents, their droppings, urine, or saliva. Symptoms can range from mild flu-like conditions to severe respiratory complications.

The Ghana Health Service is also urging the public to maintain proper hygiene, avoid contact with rodents, and report any unusual symptoms to the nearest health facility.

Authorities say the proactive approach is part of broader measures to safeguard public health and strengthen Ghana’s preparedness against emerging infectious diseases.
