According to the Ministry, the recruitment process prioritised underserved and rural communities to improve access to healthcare services across the country.

The Ministry secured financial clearance to recruit approximately 8,000 health workers, amid a backlog of more than 105,000 unemployed health professionals nationwide.

At the end of the exercise:

  • 6,245 out of 6,500 advertised nursing and midwifery positions were filled
  • 771 allied health professionals were recruited out of 900 slots
  • 235 pharmacy professionals were selected out of 250 positions
  • 300 physician assistants were also successfully recruited

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, May 18, the Director of Human Resources at the Ministry of Health, Frederick Mensah-Acheampong, disclosed that some vacancies still remain in parts of the Northern Region, with about 87 nursing slots yet to be filled.

He added that a mop-up exercise would be conducted in the coming weeks to accommodate applicants who could not complete the recruitment process.

The Ministry says the exercise forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare workforce and improve primary healthcare delivery nationwide.
