EC May Declare Prof. Seidu Alidu Unopposed in Tamale Central By-Election
JHNews || Prof. Seidu Mahama Alidu risks being declared MP for Tamale Central without a by-election if no other candidate files by the extended deadline of September 30. The EC has reopened nominations after two withdrawals left him unopposed, citing legal regulation that allows for this outcome. If no challenger comes forward, the scheduled election will be canceled and Prof. Alidu declared winner.

Accra, September 16, 2025 — The Electoral Commission (EC) has indicated that Prof. Seidu Mahama Alidu, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in the Tamale Central by-election, could be declared unopposed if no other nominations are submitted by the deadline of September 30, 2025.
Deputy Chairperson of the EC in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, said that under Sub-regulation (3) of Regulation 13 of C.I. 127, “where at the close of nominations and after the further period of ten days under Sub-regulation (2) only one candidate stands nominated, an election shall not be conducted and that candidate shall be declared elected.”
Already, the EC has reopened nominations (from September 12 to September 21) following withdrawals by two of the initial applicants, which temporarily left Prof. Alidu as the sole nominee.
If someone does file to contest by September 30, the by-election will proceed as planned on the scheduled date. If not, Prof. Alidu would skip the poll and become MP unopposed.
