Akwatia By-Election: NDC Flips Five Key Electoral Areas, Defies Poll Predictions
Polls predicted a 12–9 advantage for the NPP in Akwatia’s electoral areas, but the NDC flipped five, including two Akan-majority zones, highlighting cracks in NPP’s strongholds.

JHNews || Akwatia, September 6, 2025 — Final projections by Global InfoAnalytics had suggested that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was on course to win 12 electoral areas (EAs), with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) taking 9. However, the actual results defied those forecasts, with the NDC successfully flipping five additional electoral areas that were initially leaning toward the NPP.
According to analysts, the NDC’s ability to strategically target undecided voters played a decisive role. Using available voter data, the party managed to swing areas where the polls had shown NPP dominance.
Interestingly, three of the flipped electoral areas had significant ethnic minority populations, where voter mobilization often proves critical. Yet, two other flipped areas were predominantly Akan strongholds — traditionally considered NPP territory — raising serious concerns within the ruling party about waning support even in its base.
Political watchers say this outcome underscores the NDC’s growing ability to break into the NPP’s traditional vote bank while consolidating support in more diverse communities
