OPPONG NKRUMAH ACCUSES MAJORITY OF BLOCKING MEDIA COVERAGE OF BoG DEBATE

The Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority in Parliament of attempting to prevent the media from covering discussions relating to the Bank of Ghana.

Addressing journalists at a press conference, Hon. Oppong Nkrumah criticized what he described as efforts by the Majority to limit transparency and public scrutiny of parliamentary proceedings concerning the Central Bank.

According to him, the Minority has consistently raised concerns over the Bank of Ghana's foreign exchange management strategy and the financial implications of interventions aimed at stabilizing the Ghana Cedi.

He argued that Parliament has a constitutional responsibility to scrutinize the Bank of Ghana's operations, including questions surrounding foreign exchange injections into the market, the country's reserve build-up strategy, and the financial impact of those interventions.

The Ofoase Ayirebi Lawmaker also questioned the delay in presenting the Bank of Ghana's financial statements to Parliament, insisting that lawmakers must have access to the institution's audited accounts to effectively perform their oversight responsibilities.

Hon. Oppong Nkrumah further accused the Majority of frustrating efforts to obtain complete and timely information on the Central Bank's operations, alleging that responses provided to parliamentary inquiries were incomplete and failed to address the issues raised.

He maintained that restricting media coverage of parliamentary proceedings on the Bank of Ghana undermines transparency and denies Ghanaians access to matters of significant public interest.

The Minority called for greater openness and accountability in Parliament's handling of issues concerning the Bank of Ghana, stressing that public confidence in the country's financial institutions depends on transparency and effective parliamentary oversight.
