Lincoln University Cancels Honorary Doctorate for Mahama Over LGBTQ Concerns
Pennsylvania — Lincoln University has cancelled plans to confer an honorary doctorate on John Dramani Mahama, just days before the scheduled ceremony.
The university also called off the President’s visit, citing concerns raised by members of its community regarding his perceived stance on Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, widely linked to LGBTQ+ issues.
According to Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, the decision was communicated at a late stage despite prior engagements and completion of logistical preparations for the event.
The honorary degree was intended to recognise Mr. Mahama’s contributions to governance, public service, and global advocacy.
The last-minute cancellation has sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting the university’s stance on human rights concerns, while others have criticised the timing and manner of the decision.
Officials say the development adds to ongoing international discussions surrounding Ghana’s proposed legislation and its broader implications.
