Railway Workers Threaten Nationwide Strike Over 12 Months of Unpaid Wages
JHNews || The Railway Workers Union of Ghana has given notice that it will stage a nationwide strike on September 30 unless authorities clear a year’s worth of unpaid wages. Despite repeated appeals, no resolution has been reached. Workers are demanding negotiations or arbitration under the Labour Act. The strike will involve major cities and include public demonstrations if the deadline of September 22 passes without progress.

Accra, September 16, 2025 — The Railway Workers Union of Ghana has issued a strike and mass picketing notice for September 30, 2025, citing 12 months of unpaid salaries as far back as October 2024 as the main grievance.
In a formal notice submitted to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command on September 15, the union described the delay in payment as causing “grave hardship” for its members, including financial distress, family breakdowns, health issues (such as strokes), disruption of children’s education, and widespread frustration.
The union says attempts to engage the Ministry of Transport and other relevant authorities have failed to produce results. They accuse the government of failing to trigger negotiation, mediation, or arbitration as required under Section 161 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
If no concrete action is taken by September 22, the union says it will go ahead with the strike as planned. Workers from major cities including Tema, Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tarkwa are expected to participate. Planned protest actions include petitions to Parliament, a march to the Ghana Railway Development Authority, and picketing at various state offices.
