Michael Essien reflects on football's tactical shift compared to his era

Former Ghana international Michael Essien has highlighted how football has evolved tactically since his playing days, noting the increasing emphasis on strategy over physicality.

Essien, who retired in 2020 after a 22-year career with clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Lyon, explained that the sport was much more physical during his time on the pitch.

"Football is changing. During my time, it was quite physical, and fans loved to see players going in for tackles," he told JoySports.

The 41-year-old, now a part of the coaching staff at Danish club FC Nordsjælland, pointed out how midfield roles have shifted, with the traditional No.10 position disappearing. "Now, it's two No.8s and a No.6, and those No.8s can become the No.10s, depending on how you want to play," Essien explained.

"Sometimes, you move your full-backs high and bring your wingers in to create overloads in certain areas."

Essien enjoyed a highly successful career, winning two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2012 with Chelsea. He also made 59 appearances for Ghana, scoring nine goals.

Essien’s comments reflect the broader tactical changes in modern football, with teams now favoring positional play and fluid formations over pure physical contests.
