Thomas Partey has just revealed in an interview that the only reason he left Atlético Madrid in 2020 was because club president Enrique Cerezo refused to grant his agent a 10% commission.

Atlético had offered Partey a contract renewal with improved terms, which he accepted—on the condition that his agent would receive a 10% commission. Everyone at the board level was in agreement with this, but they asked him to speak directly with Cerezo for the final approval.
Cerezo told Partey that he could only offer 3% instead of 10%. Partey even offered to cover the remaining 7% himself out of his own salary, but Cerezo refused, giving “principles” as an excuse.
The day before the transfer window closed, Partey’s agent reached out to Arsenal. The English club, under the impression that Partey had already renewed with Atleti, congratulated him for the renewal. However, the agent explained the unresolved commission issue—something Arsenal was happy to accommodate.
Everything was finalized just before the deadline, and that’s how Partey made the switch from Atlético Madrid to Arsenal.
