Bank of Ghana Declares Cedi Bouquets and Hampers Illegal, Calls for Immediate End to Practice
JHNews || The Bank of Ghana has declared “cedi bouquets” and hampers offered in forex transactions illegal and has called on all parties to stop the practice immediately, warning of enforcement actions to ensure market transparency and compliance.
Accra, Ghana — The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has declared the practice of gifting “cedi bouquets” and hampers during foreign exchange transactions as illegal, urging both businesses and individuals to immediately stop the activity.
In a statement, BoG reiterated that incentives such as bouquets of cedi notes and hampers offered to customers by some forex dealers and bureaux de change are not permitted under the country’s foreign exchange regulations. The central bank said such practices distort market behaviour, undermine transparency, and can create unfair competitive advantages.
BoG warned institutions and individuals engaging in the practice that they would face strict enforcement actions if they fail to comply with the law. The bank stressed that its priority is to maintain a transparent and orderly foreign exchange market that reflects true supply and demand.
The directive from BoG comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilise the Ghanaian cedi and strengthen confidence in the forex market. Officials have said that all market participants must operate within the regulatory framework to ensure stability and protect consumers.
