DVLA to Roll Out Biometric International Driver’s Licenses and Vehicle Permits in 2026
JHNews || Ghana’s DVLA is finally taking bold steps to modernize its licensing systems, replacing outdated paper-based documents with secure biometric versions that meet global travel and security benchmarks.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) of Ghana is set to launch biometric international driving and vehicle permits to enhance global recognition and security for Ghanaian drivers.
The move follows growing complaints from Ghanaians abroad that their current International Driver’s Licenses (IDLs) and International Vehicle Permits (IVPs) are being rejected in some countries, despite Ghana being a signatory to the UN Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.
According to the DVLA, the upcoming biometric documents will comply with ISO international security and verification standards, featuring a bio-data page, embedded digital security features, and machine-readable elements to prevent forgery and ensure smooth authentication abroad.
The initiative, which will be rolled out across all DVLA centers beginning 2026, is part of a broader digital transformation agenda to align Ghana’s licensing systems with international protocols.
The upgrade is expected to:
- Strengthen international confidence in Ghanaian-issued driving documents.
- Facilitate smoother mobility for Ghanaians abroad.
- Enhance document security and verification for both local and global use.
DVLA officials have assured that public sensitization campaigns will precede the rollout to educate drivers on application procedures and transition timelines.
