Ghana on Friday commemorated the 77th anniversary of the 28th February Christiansborg Crossroads Shooting incident with a solemn ceremony at Nationalism Park in Osu, Accra.
The event, attended by top government officials, honored the bravery of ex-servicemen who were shot while peacefully protesting for their unpaid benefits after serving in World War II. Among the dignitaries present were Vice President H.E. Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Minister for the Interior Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, and Minister for Defence Dr. Omane Boamah.
The Christiansborg Crossroads Shooting, which took place in 1948, was a defining moment in Ghana’s fight for independence. It ignited nationwide protests and intensified the call for self-rule, ultimately leading to the country’s liberation from colonial rule in 1957.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the significance of remembering the sacrifices made by the fallen heroes. She urged Ghanaians to uphold their legacy by fostering unity and patriotism.
A wreath-laying ceremony was held in their honor, with representatives from government, the security services, and veterans paying their respects. The commemoration served as a reminder of the country’s journey to independence and the enduring spirit of those who fought for freedom.
