Ghana to Drill Two New Exploration Wells by Q3 2026 — President Mahama
Ghana, via GNPC/Explorco, plans to drill two exploration wells by Q3 2026 as part of its drive to tap into untapped petroleum reserves, especially in the Voltaian Basin. The move aims to enhance energy security and attract foreign investment.

JHNews || Accra, September 16, 2025 — President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and its subsidiary Explorco will drill two new exploration wells by the end of the third quarter of 2026.
Speaking at the Africa Oil Week Summit, President Mahama said this initiative is part of Ghana’s strategy to maximize its hydrocarbon potential. He also highlighted large unlicensed acreage in both offshore and onshore basins, pointing out that the Voltaian Basin onshore region is one of the most promising unexplored frontiers in Africa.
The president appealed to international energy companies to form partnerships, noting that Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector remains open for business. The planned drilling program is expected to strengthen energy security, attract foreign investment, and position the country as a leading hub for oil and gas exploration in West Africa.
