Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu Referred to NPP National Council of Elders for Disciplinary Action

The National Executive Committee New Patriotic Party (NPP) at its meeting held on March 11, 2025 at Alisa Hotel has referred Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu to the National Council of Elders for disciplinary action over his recent actions regarding the Ashanti Region’s election report. According to sources, the Committee views his decision to publicly discuss the so called “Leaked” findings of the regional review report as a breach of the Party’s traditions and internal protocols.
Many within the NPP have criticized Hon. Mensah Bonsu’s actions, arguing that such sensitive matters should have remained within the Party’s leadership structures. The Party had already initiated a nationwide review to analyze the causes of its unprecedented electoral defeat, yet the embattled former Majority Leader and his team independently conducted a separate investigation focused solely on the Ashanti Region. Sources indicate that this initiative was not sanctioned by the Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC)and a statement discouraging such review was issued by the Party . This is raising concerns about the motives behind the move.
What has further aggravated the situation is his continuous media engagements, where he has openly discussed the Party’s internal weaknesses and strategies. There are also allegations that the findings in his report do not accurately reflect the concerns of the Party’s grassroots in the region. Some critics have questioned why a report centered on the Ashanti Region’s electoral outcome would contain strong criticisms of Hon. Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, who neither resides in nor hails from the region (page 21 of the said report) . Recently, Hon. Stephen Amoah (Sticker), the MP for Nhyieso also criticised the said findings.
It is also alleged that the report was strategically crafted to create division among some key figures within the Party. Prominent individuals mentioned in the report include Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), President Nana Akufo-Addo, Hon. Afenyo-Markin, Kwame Baffoe(Abronye), Nana Obiri Boahene and others. This has raised suspicions about the true intent behind the report and whether it serves the Party’s interest or fuels internal discord.
Many within the Party are also questioning why Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu would take the lead on such an initiative ahead of the official reorganization committee chaired by Prof. Mike Oquaye. These developments have led the Party’s highest decision-making body to take steps to restore order and ensure adherence to internal processes.
The matter now is before the National Council of Elders . Party members and the general public await the final decision on Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu’s actions and any potential repercussions he may face.
