John Dramani Mahama Inaugurates New Prison Camp in Damongo, Savannah Region
JHNews || Between infrastructure and intent, Ghana’s correctional system just got a much needed upgrade. But building the camp is one thing, making it a genuine workshop of transformation and human dignity is the real test.
Damongo, November 6 2025 — President John Dramani Mahama officially commissioned a modern 260-capacity camp prison at Damongo in the Savannah Region, built in partnership with The Church of Pentecost to enhance rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.
The facility includes a skills-training centre (for carpentry and tailoring), a chapel/classroom, mechanised boreholes, an infirmary, CCTV installations and more.
President Mahama described the camp as “a sanctuary for rehabilitation, a centre for second chances, and a workshop for transforming lives,” emphasising that national development is a shared moral endeavour beyond government alone.
He also announced reforms for the Ghana Prisons Service: expanding alternative sentencing for non-violent offences, reviewing bail conditions, and introducing a parole system to reduce overcrowding.
