MAJORITY LEADER FILES INJUNCTION OVER MINORITY'S MOVE TO DECLARE INDEPENDENT MPs’ SEATS VACANT.
Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has taken swift action by filing an injunction application at the Supreme Court. This move counters the Minority's bid to declare the seats of independent MPs vacant, as spearheaded by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu. Iddrisu invoked Article 97(1)(g) of the Constitution, which stipulates that MPs must vacate their seats if they leave their elected party or remain independent.
The Stakes:
• Three Majority MPs and one NDC MP face potential vacancy, dramatically shifting Parliament's balance of power.
• NDC's Path to Majority: If successful, the NDC would surpass the Majority party, moving from 137 to potentially 141 seats.
Afenyo-Markin's Concerns:
• Reluctant to revisit the 2020 precedent, where NPP MP Andrew Amoako Asiamah's seat was vacated under similar circumstances.
• Insists the Supreme Court should resolve the issue.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has deferred ruling on the petition seeking to declare the seats vacant. This development adds another layer to the complex political landscape ahead of Ghana's 2024 elections.
