MINORITY ACCUSES MAHAMA-LED GOVERNMENT OF HYPOCRISY OVER DELAY IN ANTI-LGBTQ+ LAW

Speaking to the media in Parliament on 26th January, 2026, the minority side of House heavily criticised the government over what it describes as hypocrisy surrounding the delay in the passage of Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ law.

According to the Minority, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), while in opposition, mounted sustained pressure on the then New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to pass the bill, including organising protests and engaging religious and traditional leaders.

Minority Leader Hon.  Alexander Afenyo-Markin further accused the government of double standards and deliberately frustrating efforts to pass the legislation.
He questioned the government’s current posture, noting that nearly one year after assuming office, the NDC had gone silent on the issue.
Hon. Afenyo-Markin again accused the Majority Caucus and its leader, Hon.Mahama Ayariga, of blocking attempts to reintroduce the bill through parliamentary procedure.
He alleged that procedural tactics were used to halt progress on the bill.

The Minority alleged the NDC is exploiting the bill purely for electoral advantage.

Touching on other national issues of importance, the minority leader and his caucus argued that current economic stability is due to external factors such as IMF bailouts, debt restructuring initiated by the previous NPP government, and rising gold prices rather than NDC competence.

The Caucus also vowed to resist any government bills introduced under a certificate of urgency to ensure proper scrutiny and prevent the rushing of legislation.
