Appearing before the Committee on Assurances, Hon. Issifu said he had engagements with President John Dramani Mahama following the downpour that destroyed properties and livelihoods.

"Clearly, when it happened, I had an engagement with His Excellency John Dramani Mahama who asked me to kick in a climate emergency resource mobilisation track. That resource mobilisation track is supposed to take advantage of climate financing opportunities across the globe to augment government effort," he said.

He added that as of yesterday, he had signed close to 50 different proposals to various institutions, with a target of 100 by Monday.

"As at yesterday, I signed close to 50 different proposals to different institutions, with the hope that between now and Monday I should do up to 100. And we are hopeful that from that angle we will be able to mobilise some money to support government effort."

Hon. Issifu stressed that climate change is real and its impacts cannot be stopped overnight, only minimised.

"Climate change is a reality. It is there. It cannot just go like that. People shouldn’t think that you can just stop it. You cannot stop it. What we saw is a function of climate change. So it’s going to take a while. We should work on it to minimise it so that at the end of the day the impact on people will be better."

He called for investment in locally-led adaptation to reduce the impact of future climate events.

"We should invest in locally-led adaptation so when the incident comes, it will be minimal."
