National Identification Authority Cracks Down on Corruption in Registration Processes

Accra, Ghana — The National Identification Authority (NIA) has issued a stern warning against corrupt practices within its registration processes, following allegations of staff members extorting applicants and soliciting unauthorized benefits. Management condemned the acts as “unlawful, unethical, and a direct violation of public service principles” in a press release dated Tuesday, 18th March 2025.

The authority outlined three key measures to address the misconduct: a zero-tolerance policy for corruption, enforced transparency in service delivery, and strict disciplinary action against offenders. Public officers are now explicitly barred from accepting bribes, gifts, or favors in exchange for services, while applicants are guaranteed fair treatment free from coercion.

“Any staff member found engaging in extortion or unethical behavior will face severe consequences, including suspension, dismissal, and legal prosecution,” the statement emphasized. The NIA also urged citizens to report misconduct via its Contact Centre at 0302999309, assuring that all complaints would be thoroughly investigated.

Williams Anponah Emmanuel Darlas, Acting Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate, reiterated the NIA’s commitment to ethical service delivery. “The trust of the public is paramount. Exploitation of applicants for personal gain will not be tolerated,” he stated.

The crackdown aligns with Ghana’s Public Service Human Resource Management Policy, mandating adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and approved fees. Management vowed to enforce the measures rigorously, aiming to restore confidence in the national registration system
