Nationwide Protest Looms as Political Parties Condemn Suspension of Chief Justice

Accra, April 25, 2025 — A coalition of political parties has announced plans for a nationwide demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025, in protest against what they describe as the unconstitutional suspension of the Chief Justice and the unlawful termination of key judicial appointments.
The announcement follows an emergency meeting held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, involving the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), Ghana Union Movement (GUM), and several other political groups. The parties jointly condemned what they see as a direct assault on Ghana’s democratic institutions and judicial independence.
In a strongly-worded statement, the parties accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating a sustained campaign of judicial intimidation, warning that the trend threatens the core of the country’s democracy. They cited a historical reference to a failed 2010 attempt by the NDC to remove then-Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, arguing that recent actions mirror that episode.
“The rule of law is under attack,” the parties said. “This is not just about politics—it’s about protecting the soul of our democracy.”
They further argued that the NDC’s actions signal a dangerous attempt to consolidate power by controlling all branches of government, including the judiciary, which is supposed to remain independent.
Calling on citizens to rise in defense of constitutional rule, the coalition emphasized that Ghanaians must not remain silent in the face of what they deem blatant disregard for the law.
“This protest is a clarion call to all: defend justice, democracy, and the sanctity of our constitution. We will not allow political manipulation to dismantle the independence of our judiciary,” the statement concluded.
The demonstration is expected to draw significant public support, with organizers vowing that it will be peaceful but firm in its demand for the restoration of constitutional order.
