No Desk Syndrome Affects Teaching and Learning at Gambrongo Basic School

June 12, 2025 – A recent visit to Gambrongo in the Upper East Region ,Basic School by JHNEWSonline revealed a concerning situation where lower primary students are forced to sit on the floor during lessons due to a severe shortage of furniture. The school’s Basic 1 and 2 classes have no desks, while Class 3 has only 7 dual desks, woefully inadequate for the number of students.

This lack of furniture is significantly impacting the learning experience of these young students, making it difficult for them to focus and engage with the lessons. The situation is further complicated by the fact that the students are sitting on the floor, which can lead to discomfort and health issues.

Headmistress Mary Azeko expressed her concerns in an interview with JHNEWSonline on June 12, 2025, lamenting the challenges posed by the furniture shortage. “It’s heartbreaking to see our students sitting on the floor while trying to learn,” she said. “We urge stakeholders to come to our aid and provide us with the necessary furniture to create a conducive learning environment for our students.”

The situation calls for urgent attention to ensure that students have access to basic learning facilities. JHNEWSonline hopes that this report will spark action from relevant authorities and philanthropists to address the issue and provide these students with the resources they need to succeed.

In the meantime, the school administration is exploring temporary solutions to mitigate the impact of the furniture shortage. However, a long-term solution is necessary to ensure that the students can learn in a comfortable and supportive environment.

Let’s hope that this report sparks action to address the issue and provide these students with the resources they need to succeed!
