Vice President Commissions Softcare FM’s Fourth Production Line to Boost Local Sanitary Pad Production
JHNews || The Vice President has commissioned Softcare FM’s fourth production line, boosting local sanitary pad production, supporting jobs, advancing import substitution, and strengthening Ghana’s Free Sanitary Pad Initiative with a GH¢292.4 million budget allocation.
Accra, Ghana — December 2025 — Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has commissioned the fourth production line of Softcare FM Manufacturing Limited, describing the expansion as a major step in Ghana’s drive toward industrialisation, import substitution, and economic transformation.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Vice President said the project reflects the impact of deliberate government policy combined with private sector confidence, commending the Sunda Group, owners of Softcare FM, for investing in local manufacturing.
The newly commissioned line, equipped with modern technology, is expected to significantly increase Ghana’s supply of locally manufactured sanitary pads while creating additional employment opportunities. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the expansion aligns with government efforts to promote value addition and reduce reliance on imports.
She stressed that Africa’s future lies in local production and industrial growth, urging a shift away from exporting raw materials toward building industries that create jobs and retain wealth within national economies.
Beyond economic benefits, the Vice President highlighted the social impact of the project, pointing to menstrual hygiene as a key issue affecting girls’ education and dignity. She said locally produced sanitary pads would help address period poverty, particularly among schoolgirls.
In support of this goal, she revealed that the 2026 Budget has allocated GH¢292.4 million for the Free Sanitary Pad Initiative, adding that all sanitary pads under the programme will be produced locally, in line with directives from President John Dramani Mahama.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang praised Softcare FM’s management and workforce, noting that the new production line, capable of producing about 1,100 packs per minute, positions the company to serve both domestic needs and potential export markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
