Six Drivers Arrested as Accra Mayor Leads Evening Crackdown on Unapproved Transport Fares
JHNews || The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has intensified enforcement against unapproved transport fares, with six drivers arrested during a mayor led evening operation aimed at protecting commuters and ensuring compliance with approved rates.
Accra, Ghana — Wednesday evening, December 2025
Six commercial drivers were arrested after the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, led an evening taskforce operation to enforce approved transport fares across parts of the capital.
The exercise, which commenced around 5:30 p.m., covered sections of the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue from the COCOBOD area through to the Farisco traffic light, a busy corridor during peak-hour traffic. The operation targeted commercial vehicles transporting passengers to destinations such as Kaneshie, Awoshie, Kasoa and Lapaz.
During the operation, the Mayor and members of the taskforce stopped trotros and other commercial vehicles, questioning drivers on the fares being charged while also verifying the amounts with passengers onboard. While some drivers were found to be complying with the approved fare structure, others were discovered charging higher-than-approved fares.
Six drivers who were found to have violated the approved fare guidelines were subsequently arrested as part of efforts to protect commuters from exploitation and ensure adherence to transport regulations.
