The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has defended its performance, asserting that the institution has delivered returns to the state far exceeding the total funds allocated to it since its inception in 2018.

In its Half-Yearly Report for the second half of 2025, the OSP said its investigations, asset recoveries, blocked fraudulent contracts and corruption-risk interventions have saved Ghana more than 20 times the amount of money released to it by the government.

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, described the narrative that the OSP is “a drain on national resources” as inaccurate, stressing that the office’s work has justified its existence and budget. According to the report, every GH₵1 spent on the OSP has helped prevent the loss of more than GH₵20 through its anti-corruption actions.

The report’s findings come amid recent parliamentary debate over a proposed bill that sought to repeal the OSP Act, a move later halted after intervention from President John Dramani Mahama.

The OSP highlighted notable cases and interventions, including high-profile prosecutions and fraud prevention measures that contributed to the claimed savings.
