The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed the tragic drowning of a six-year-old girl at Sonitra, a suburb of Kpetoe in the Volta Region.

According to the GNFS, personnel from the Kpetoe Command responded swiftly to a distress call at about 1:40 p.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2026, following reports of a drowning incident involving Sarah Ahiafor, a six-year-old child.

The rescue team, led by Assistant Station Officer David Dzah, immediately mobilised and conducted a search-and-rescue operation at the scene. The child’s body was later retrieved from the water; however, all attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

The deceased was subsequently handed over to the Ghana Police Service for preservation and further investigations.

Preliminary findings indicate that the child drowned while in the company of other children who had gone to wash clothes at a pond-like water body used for irrigation purposes.

In response to the incident, the Ghana National Fire Service has cautioned parents and guardians to closely supervise children and prevent them from visiting or engaging in activities around ponds, irrigation sites, and other open water bodies without adult supervision.

The Service also extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of life and property.
