GFA fines Nations FC’s Emmanuel Annor for displaying religious message during goal celebration

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has fined Nations FC forward Emmanuel Annor GHs500 for misconduct after he celebrated a goal by unveiling a religious message during a Ghana Premier League fixture against Asante Kotoko.
Annor, who found the net in the high-profile clash, removed his shirt to reveal an undershirt with the inscription “I belong to Jesus.” The gesture, though applauded by some fans, was deemed a violation of the league's regulations by the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee.
In a statement released on May 13, 2025, the GFA said: “The player was found guilty of displaying a religious message on his undergarment after removing his shirt in celebration.”
While recognising the personal sentiments behind such acts, the GFA reiterated that players are barred from displaying religious or political messages during matches. The regulations are in place to ensure neutrality and consistency across all league fixtures.
The Disciplinary Committee also issued a strong warning to Annor, cautioning that repeat offences could lead to more severe penalties, including suspension. “He has also been strongly warned that any further misconduct will result in severe sanctions,” the statement added.
The incident has sparked debate among football fans and commentators over the balance between personal expression and professional conduct in sport. While some praised Annor’s bold declaration of faith, others backed the GFA’s position in enforcing the league’s code of conduct.
