Man Utd transfer: Medical booked as Matthijs de Ligt prediction made
Erik ten Hag will be eager to bring in another defender - especially after losing new addition Leny Yoro for three months - having already seen Raphael Varane leave on a free transfer.
And with both Mason Greenwood and Donny van de Beek also departing, there is space in the squad for more midfield depth too with the Dutchman chasing a partner to Kobbie Mainoo amid links to Manuel Ugarte.
Below, Mirror Football rounds up the latest breaking transfer news surrounding Manchester United, as well as gossip and rumours.
Ex-Arsenal starlet completes medical
United are close to completing one deal in the coming days, at least, even if he might not be a ready-made first team star, with teenage forward Chido Obi-Martin completing his medical at Carrington.
The 16-year-old has dazzled for Arsenal's youth sides - netting five hat-tricks in the last nine games of the Under-18 Premier League season. That included seven goals in one game against Norwich and five against West Ham.
Now Fabrizio Romano has reported that while the medical checks will be rudimentary, the official announcement could be a way off as the deal is subject to the Premier League's five-step investigation.
De Ligt tipped to prosper at United
United are desperate for more quality in defence after some leaky displays at the back last season, with Yoro's injury only making their predicament more desperate, and Bayern's Mattijs de Ligt appears a good fit for Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have already declined Bayern's mooted price of £42m earlier in the summer, but losing Yoro may tempt them back into talks - and former assistant boss Rene Meulensteen believes the Dutchman could thrive at United.
"Matthijs de Ligt can reach his potential in the Premier League," he told Boyle Sports. "He is a player who suits the division. He is strong and powerful, and it helps that Erik ten Hag knows him. De Ligt was flying at Ajax when Ten Hag was there, and he was one of the best players in Holland.
"I think the move to Juventus didn’t quite work, and his career stalled at Bayern Munich because they might not think he is good enough on the ball. But United need strengthening and he will do that at centre back."
United make contact with Berge
With interest now cooling in Ugarte, United are now pushing ahead with their plans to finally land a central mifielder this summer and Burnley star Sander Berge has emerged as a surprise target.
The Athletic have reported that the Norway international, 26, fills the role United are looking to fill and represents a far cheaper option that Ugarte - who PSG were quoting £51.5m for, causing United to walk way from negotiations.
Berge already has Premier League experience from his two seasons with Sheffield United between 2020 and 2021 and turned heads with some impressive displays for the Clarets last season, playing 37 out of 38 games, despite their relegation from the top flight.
