Poultry prices may rise ahead of Christmas as feed and freight costs increase
The Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association has warned that poultry prices could rise ahead of Christmas due to increasing feed costs, higher freight charges and expensive imported additives.
ACCRA, October 28, 2026 — Poultry prices in Ghana could increase ahead of the Christmas festivities as rising animal feed costs, higher freight charges and expensive imported additives put pressure on production costs.
The Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association has warned that the rising cost of production could affect the prices of poultry products as farmers prepare to meet increased consumer demand during the festive season.
According to a report by Citi Newsroom, the association says the rising cost of key inputs is creating additional financial pressure on poultry farmers.
Rising costs threaten poultry production
Feed is one of the major expenses in poultry farming. Increases in the cost of feed ingredients, together with higher freight charges and the cost of imported additives, can make it more expensive for farmers to raise birds.
These additional expenses could eventually be passed on to consumers, depending on how production costs and market conditions develop in the coming weeks.
Christmas demand could add pressure
Demand for chicken and other poultry products traditionally increases during the Christmas and New Year festivities, when households, restaurants and food vendors purchase more for celebrations.
If production costs remain high while demand increases, consumers could face higher prices for poultry products during the festive period.
The potential price increase could also affect food vendors and businesses that rely on poultry as a major ingredient.
