The Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) has recommended significant changes to Ghana’s supreme law, including a shift from the current 4-year presidential term to a 5-year term and the introduction of a 30-year minimum age requirement for presidential candidates.

The proposals part of the ongoing review of the 1992 Constitution are aimed at enhancing political stability and broadening youth participation in national leadership. The Committee argues that a 5-year term will provide greater continuity for long-term policy implementation, while the age limit seeks to open the presidency to younger, emerging leaders.

In addition to the presidential amendments, the CRC is expected to table other recommendations covering electoral reforms, decentralisation, and governance issues, which will be subjected to public consultations before any final decisions are made.

The draft report sparked mixed reactions among political actors and civic groups, with some applauding the youth-friendly age threshold and others warning that term extension proposals must be carefully scrutinised to avoid unintended consequences on democratic accountability.

The full report is scheduled for presentation to Parliament in early 2026, after which it will enter the public engagement phase.
