GJA President Blasts Galamsey Attack on Journalists, Demands Justice

ACCRA – The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has come out swinging against the violent assault of three journalists by illegal miners in the Breman-Adomanya forest.
The incident, which occurred on February 21, 2025, saw the journalists—who were on assignment documenting the devastating impact of illegal mining—savagely beaten and their equipment destroyed.
In a strongly worded statement, Mr. Dwumfour condemned the attack as “barbaric” and called for swift justice.
“It is unfortunate that in spite of the crucial role media practitioners play in the fight against galamsey, our welfare is not prioritized,” he said.
The GJA President also decried what he described as the consistent neglect of journalists’ safety, particularly those covering high-risk beats such as illegal mining. He emphasized that the media’s exclusion from government-led anti-galamsey initiatives only deepens their vulnerability.
In response, the GJA is set to engage with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Ghana Police Service to advocate for stronger security provisions for journalists on the frontlines.
