GJA President Condemns Mahama Administration Over Rising Attacks on Journalists

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Kwabena Dwumfour, has strongly condemned the Mahama administration for the increasing number of assaults on journalists, calling for urgent measures to protect press freedom.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Dwumfour expressed deep concern over the growing threats faced by media practitioners in the country. He accused the administration of failing to uphold the rights and safety of journalists, noting that attacks on media personnel have become more frequent under its leadership.

the rise in assaults on journalists is alarming and unacceptable. A free and independent press is fundamental to our democracy, yet journalists continue to face intimidation, harassment, and physical attacks,he stated.

The GJA president urged the government to take swift action to investigate these attacks and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. He also called on security agencies to provide better protection for journalists, emphasizing the need for a safe environment where media professionals can carry out their duties without fear.

Several media watchdog organizations have also raised concerns about the deteriorating state of press freedom in Ghana. Reports indicate that journalists covering politically sensitive issues, corruption cases, and public demonstrations have been targeted in recent months.

The GJA has vowed to continue advocating for the safety and rights of journalists while pushing for stronger legal protections to prevent further attacks.

Meanwhile, media practitioners and civil society groups are urging the government to reaffirm its commitment to press freedom and take concrete steps to address the rising incidents of violence against journalists.

The Mahama administration has yet to respond to these allegations.
