GJA: Rising Attacks on Journalists Under Mahama Administration - 7 New Cases

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has described the increasing attacks on journalists under the Mahama administration as unprecedented, citing at least seven reported cases of assault on media practitioners.

According to the GJA, these incidents reflect a worrying trend that threatens press freedom and the safety of journalists in the country. Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, GJA President Kwabena Dwumfour condemned the attacks and called on the government to take immediate action to protect journalists.

The level of assaults on journalists under this administration is deeply concerning. We have recorded seven cases so far, which is unprecedented. Journalists should be able to do their work without fear of intimidation or violence,Dwumfour stated.

He further urged law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate these incidents and ensure that perpetrators face justice. He emphasized that failure to address the attacks could discourage journalists from holding authorities accountable and reporting on critical national issues.

Several media rights organizations have echoed the GJA concerns, warning that continued assaults on journalists could undermine Ghana reputation as a democratic nation that upholds press freedom.

Meanwhile, journalists affected by the attacks have called for stronger legal protections and assurances of safety while carrying out their duties. Some have expressed frustration over the lack of swift responses from authorities when such incidents occur.
