The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has firmly rejected any proposal to amend the 1992 Constitution to allow a third presidential term, stating it has no intention of supporting such a move now or in the future.

In a press release signed by the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the NDC dismissed public speculation following comments attributed to Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga suggesting a possible constitutional amendment to allow President John Dramani Mahama to contest again.

The party stressed that it remains fully committed to Ghana’s two-term presidential limit, describing it as a cornerstone of the country’s democratic stability. The statement recalled that the NDC was instrumental in crafting the 1992 Constitution and deliberately capped presidential terms to prevent abuse of power and safeguard national peace.

The NDC warned that any attempt to alter the term limit could create unnecessary tension and undermine the country’s democratic gains. It further clarified that the party will neither sponsor nor tolerate any effort to amend the Constitution for the benefit of any individual, including President Mahama.
