PAJAG Launches Nationwide Media Campaign to Combat Galamsey in Ghana
A coalition of media professionals, known as Patriotic Journalists Against Galamsey (PAJAG), has launched a nationwide campaign to combat illegal mining, or "galamsey," in Ghana. The campaign, themed "Galamsey Ends Here – The Pen is Mightier Than the Changfan," aims to address the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining through responsible journalism and public advocacy.
PAJAG's Executive Director, Nana Otu Darko, emphasized the need for collective action, stating that the coalition will go beyond reporting by naming, shaming, and pushing for prosecution of offenders. The organization's action plan focuses on sustained media advocacy, public education, and stakeholder collaboration.
The launch event, held at the Mikaddo Conference Centre in Accra, featured keynote addresses and solidarity messages from stakeholders, including Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah. Buah commended the media for their initiative, describing it as a significant step towards protecting Ghana's river bodies and forest reserves.
The government has been working to address the issue, with plans to strengthen local participation in the mining sector and ensure greater benefits for Ghana. However, the environmental impact of galamsey remains severe, with many rivers polluted and forest reserves destroyed.
