President Mahama Selects Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s Chief Justice

President John Dramani Mahama has officially nominated His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the next Chief Justice of Ghana.
The announcement was made in a press statement signed by the President’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
In accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution, the nomination has been forwarded to the Council of State for consideration. Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has served with distinction at the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and most recently the Supreme Court is widely regarded as one of the country’s most experienced and principled judges.
“He has made invaluable contributions to the development of Ghanaian jurisprudence,” the statement noted.
The statement further explained that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination is a recognition of his years of dedicated service to the judiciary, making him exceptionally suited for the role of Chief Justice.
“He has earned the esteem of the Bench, the Bar, and the wider legal fraternity for his intellect, impartiality, and unwavering commitment to justice,” it added.
“His wealth of experience and long service on the Bench render him eminently qualified for the high office of Chief Justice.”
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been serving as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, following the suspension and subsequent removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Tokornoo.
