JHNews || Accra, September 15, 2025 — The Ghanaian government has donated CFA 6 million to support Ghanaians stranded in Côte d’Ivoire following the violent clashes in Gbinyiri, Savannah Region. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced this at a government briefing in Accra.

The clashes, which began as a land dispute in early September, spread to twelve communities in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District. They have led to high levels of displacement, official counts estimate about 48,000 people displaced in total. Many sought refuge across borders in both Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso.

Here are the updated figures:

  • Of those who fled into Côte d’Ivoire, approximately 13,253 Ghanaians were initially displaced.
  • About 8,000 have since returned safely to Ghana.
  • 5,309 still remain in Côte d’Ivoire.
  • In Burkina Faso, the number of Ghanaian refugees has dropped to 1,455 from around 2,500.

The donation of CFA 6 million is meant to cover urgent humanitarian needs and logistics for those repatriating. This is separate from relief items already distributed through NADMO, such as food, water, blankets, and medicines.

Minister Ablakwa also carried a message from President John Dramani Mahama calling for peace, forgiveness, and encouraging the displaced Ghanaians to return home, citing that security has been reinforced in affected areas and normalcy restored.
