Greater Accra Hit by Devastating Floods After Torrential Rains
Heavy rains across Ghana on Monday, June 29, caused severe flooding in the Greater Accra Region, submerging homes, businesses, roads, and warehouses.
Accra, June 29, 2026 — Heavy rainfall that swept across several parts of Ghana on Monday, June 29, triggered widespread flooding in the Greater Accra Region, leaving a trail of destruction and disrupting economic activities.
The torrential downpour, which lasted for several hours, submerged major roads, residential communities, and commercial centres, with many describing it as one of the worst flooding incidents in the region’s recent history.
Several homes, shops, warehouses, and businesses were inundated as floodwaters rapidly rose, destroying properties worth millions of cedis. In some industrial and commercial areas, warehouses were completely flooded, with goods swept away or severely damaged, resulting in losses estimated to run into millions of dollars.
The flooding brought traffic to a standstill on several major roads, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded, while some motorists abandoned their vehicles after they became trapped in deep floodwaters.
Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other security agencies, were deployed to rescue stranded residents and assess the extent of the damage.
Although assessments are still ongoing, authorities are expected to determine the full scale of the destruction and provide support to affected individuals and businesses.
The incident has once again raised concerns about poor drainage systems, rapid urbanisation, and the need for stronger flood prevention measures, as many residents continue to call for long-term solutions to the perennial flooding problem in the capital.
