IGP Dampare, be alive to your responsibility - Akua Owusu Afriyie

Jh News - The Electoral Commission (EC) has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to provide adequate security to enable the completion of the collation of parliamentary election results in the Ablekuma North constituency.

In a recent briefing, the EC revealed that its premises had been attacked by alleged supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during an earlier attempt to finalize the collation process. The attackers reportedly destroyed property belonging to the commission, halting its work. Despite the presence of police personnel, no arrests were made during the incident, raising concerns about the professionalism and effectiveness of the Ghana Police Service.

The EC emphasized that this lapse in security has created unnecessary delays in declaring a winner, heightening tensions within the constituency. The commission has since appealed to IGP Dampare to ensure a secure environment for the collation process to resume and conclude without interference.

In a statement released by Hon. Akua Afriyeih’s communication bureau, the IGP was urged to act swiftly to address the situation. The statement criticized the lack of police action during the initial attack, describing it as “unacceptable and unprofessional,” and warned that any further delay could harm the credibility of the police force.

“We don’t want to believe that you are complicit in the attempts to derail the declaration of the winner in Ablekuma North. It is imperative that you fulfill your responsibilities to uphold law and order,” the statement added.

The bureau called on the IGP to demonstrate leadership and restore public confidence in the police by ensuring the Electoral Commission can carry out its constitutional mandate without fear or hindrance.

As tensions rise, stakeholders are hopeful that immediate action will be taken to bring closure to the disputed election results in Ablekuma North.
