A coalition of Members of Parliament from Ghana’s northern regions has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at transforming large-scale rice production across the north. The plan, which aligns with government’s “Feed Ghana” and food security objectives, seeks to reduce rice imports and create sustainable employment opportunities for youth and farmers.

The MPs emphasized that the initiative would focus on mechanization, access to improved seedlings, irrigation expansion, and post-harvest infrastructure — key to ending Ghana’s overreliance on imported rice. Partnerships with private investors, farmer-based organizations, and development partners are expected to drive the project’s implementation.

Addressing stakeholders at the launch in Tamale, the MPs underscored that the north holds the potential to become Ghana’s “rice powerhouse,” capable of feeding both domestic and export markets if given proper support.

They called on the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to prioritize northern farmlands in its irrigation rehabilitation and input subsidy programs, stressing that true food sovereignty begins with empowering local farmers.
