Accra, Ghana – President John Mahama delivered his much-anticipated State of the Nation Address (SONA) today, an event many Ghanaians hoped would bring renewed optimism. However, for many citizens, the speech turned out to be yet another session of rhetoric, devoid of tangible solutions to the country’s pressing challenges.

One of the most striking moments came when President Mahama spoke about job creation for the youth. As a young Ghanaian, I couldn’t help but ask:

Is this not the same president who sanctioned the mass dismissal of thousands of young people who had already been integrated into the public service?

For many, this contradiction only reinforces the perception that the Mahama administration is once again misleading the people of Ghana—just as it did between 2012 and 2016.

The realities on the ground speak for themselves:

Dumsor is back – yet the President stood before Parliament and spoke about energy reforms.

Massive borrowing continues – over GH¢50 billion has been added to the national debt in less than two months, yet he spoke about cutting down costs.

For the ordinary Ghanaian, these inconsistencies raise serious concerns about the future of the country. Was today’s address truly about solutions, or just another attempt to paint a rosy picture while the nation grapples with economic hardship?
